Written by Dr. Diane Mueller When it comes to the health and safety of our homes, there’s one silent culprit that often goes unnoticed but can lead to severe repercussions – black mold. As a lime and mold health expert, I’ve seen firsthand how neglecting this issue can wreak havoc on both health and finances. Here’s what you need to know about the real cost to remove black mold.
Let’s dive in to costs of hiring profesional, DIY options, results and my personal recommendations.
We have helped thousands of people restore their health and quality of life by diagnosing and treating their Mold Illness
A Real-Life Example: One of my clients has a severe black mold problem in her house; tragically, she also suffers from ALS. A nurse lives with her— an expensive necessity that could have been avoided if the mold issue was addressed earlier. Studies suggest that black mold is linked to neurological conditions like ALS. There’s an urgency for early, thorough remediation, even though it might be pricey upfront, as it can prevent chronic health issues. It’s my mission to educate about this, since it, unfortunately, proves more costly and painful to ignore.
Diseases Linked with Black Mold: The presence of black mold has been linked with numerous diseases like fibromyalgia, brain fog, migraines, and severe neurological dysfunctions such as dementia and cognitive decline. The evidence is alarming.
Immediate Mold Removal Costs vs. Long-Term Health Expenses: While initial mold remediation can be pricey, the longer-term health and related costs of not addressing it can be far steeper. Think of the expense related to treatments for diseases that could potentially be tied back to mold exposure.
A Cautionary Tale: A client’s experience with ALS, potentially linked to black mold exposure, and the associated costs of a live-in nurse, paints a bleak picture of the financial repercussions of not taking mold seriously.
It’s easy for homeowners to be lured into tackling mold removal themselves, assuming it will spare their wallets. However, lacking in-depth knowledge and training can turn a seemingly easy task into an escalating problem.
By hiring professional service providers, homeowners ensure the mold issue is dealt with correctly and comprehensively. While this approach might seem costlier initially, it guarantees top-quality work and long term savings, preventing future complications and health hazards, thus making it a wise and prudent choice. It’s essential to look beyond the immediate expense and understand the high cost of potential health risks untreated mold could inflict.
Not All Inspectors are Created Equal: Certification doesn’t always guarantee expertise. Be sure to ask the right questions and understand an inspector’s approach.
The Right Techniques: A qualified mold inspector will go beyond simple air samples. They will look at dust samples, check behind drywalls, examine HVACs, and adopt a comprehensive approach to ensure the mold is detected and removed thoroughly.
Personal Recommendation: The team at ‘We Inspect‘ exemplifies the diligence required in mold inspection and remediation. Their proven track record, proficiency and commitment to healthiness make them one of the best choice in mold-related services They’re among the best at what they do.
If you are going to test yourself you must use either HERTSMI-2, ERMI, or Panel 7 tests. Both HERTSMI-2 and ERMI tests focus primarily on mold toxins, which pose the greatest risk to human health. Instead of merely tallying the total mold count, you need to know the specific mold types and their quantities, as not all molds are harmful. Remember, many toxic molds are heavy and don’t remain airborne, often getting overlooked in typical air samples.
Once you get your results, you can input them into online calculators, like the one on myhousemakesmesick.com. Generally, a HERTSMI-2 score above 15 is considered highly toxic (especially for those genetically predisposed to mold reactions). Scores between 11-14 fall into a borderline range. However, for optimum health, especially for those with mold sensitivities, spaces with scores of 10 or below are recommended. I go into more detail in my book, It’s Not In Your Mind.
While the cost to remove black mold can vary and sometimes be significant, it’s essential to see it as an investment. Addressing the issue head-on, with the right experts, can save you from potential health complications and even more considerable expenses down the line.
