The HERTSMI-2 (Health Effects Roster of Type-Specific Formers of Mycotoxins and Inflammagens) is a targeted mold test that measures the five mold species most strongly linked to chronic illness, Lyme co-infections, and biotoxin illness (CIRS).
Unlike a general mold inspection, the HERTSMI-2 specifically tests for organisms that produce mycotoxins β toxic compounds that accumulate in the body and trigger serious, long-lasting health problems. If you're sick and can't get better, your home environment could be the missing piece.
Our free HERTSMI calculator for mold takes your raw spore count values from the lab report and converts them into a standardized score β so you know exactly what your results mean and what to do next.
Calculate My HERTSMI Score βThe most dangerous mold species are often hidden inside walls, under flooring, and in HVAC systems β invisible to the naked eye but detectable with a HERTSMI-2 mold test.
Three simple steps to interpret your mold test results β no expertise required.
Interested in ordering a HERTSMI-2 test? Join our Group Program β our team guides you through every step. Once you have your report, it will list spore counts (E/mg) for each of the five key mold species, which you can enter below.
Input the values from your report into our HERTSMI calculator for mold below. Each species is weighted by toxicity β our calculator applies expert-established scoring thresholds automatically.
Your total HERTSMI-2 score is calculated instantly with a clear interpretation β Safe, Caution, or High Risk β plus expert guidance on protecting your health.

Mold levels are within an acceptable range. Your home is likely not contributing significantly to illness. Continue periodic monitoring.
Elevated mold levels detected. If you are sick, sensitive, or have HLA mold susceptibility genes, remediation may be warranted. Consult a specialist.
Dangerously high mold levels. Continued exposure will worsen chronic illness. Professional mold remediation is strongly recommended immediately.
βοΈ Clinical Note from Dr. Diane Mueller
"Even a 'safe' HERTSMI calculator score doesn't fully rule out mold as a contributing factor β particularly for patients with CIRS or HLA mold gene susceptibility. A score below 11 is reassuring, but your full clinical picture always matters. Trust your symptoms."
The five mold species measured by the HERTSMI-2 test produce mycotoxins that trigger a wide range of chronic symptoms β many of which are routinely dismissed by conventional doctors.
Mycotoxins cross the blood-brain barrier, causing persistent brain fog, memory problems, and difficulty concentrating β even when standard labs look "normal."
Mold-related inflammation disrupts mitochondrial function, leaving you exhausted despite adequate sleep. No amount of rest seems to help.
Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and sinus congestion are hallmark signs of ongoing mold exposure β especially from Stachybotrys and Aspergillus species.
Inflammatory mycotoxins trigger widespread pain that mimics autoimmune conditions and is often mistaken for fibromyalgia or untreated Lyme disease.
Mold illness has a profound neurological component. Anxiety, depression, and irritability are common in patients with high HERTSMI-2 mold scores.
Chaetomium and Stachybotrys are especially immunosuppressive, leaving patients prone to infections and unable to mount a normal immune response.
The HERTSMI-2 uses dust sampling from your home to detect and quantify the five most clinically significant mold species. It is a simple, non-invasive process you can do yourself.
Raw lab numbers mean nothing without context. Our HERTSMI calculator for mold converts your spore counts into a clinically meaningful score with clear guidance.
Continuing to live in a high-mold environment while treating Lyme or chronic illness is like bailing water with the tap still running. Know your home is safe first.
No supplement or protocol delivers lasting results if ongoing mold exposure feeds your inflammation. The HERTSMI-2 calculator helps you find out fast.
A score is a starting point β not a diagnosis. Your genetics (HLA mold susceptibility), current health status, symptom history, and other exposures all affect how mold impacts you specifically.

Join the Group Program βThe HERTSMI-2 (Health Effects Roster of Type-Specific Formers of Mycotoxins and Inflammagens β 2) is a targeted environmental mold test that measures five mold species most strongly associated with chronic illness and mycotoxin production: Aspergillus Penicilloides, Aspergillus Versicolor, Chaetomium Globosum, Stachybotrys Chartarum, and Wallemia Sebi. It is a subset of the broader ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index) test, focused specifically on the organisms most clinically relevant to CIRS and biotoxin illness.
A total HERTSMI-2 score of 0β10 is considered generally safe for most people. Scores of 11β15 are in the caution range β particularly concerning for individuals with HLA mold susceptibility genes, chronic illness, or immune compromise. A score of 16 or higher indicates high mold levels that are likely contributing to ongoing illness and warrant professional remediation before any treatment protocol can be fully effective.
The ERMI tests for 36 mold species and produces a comparative moldiness index relative to normal American homes. The HERTSMI-2 is derived from the ERMI but focuses only on the 5 species most linked to mycotoxin-driven illness. For patients with CIRS, Lyme disease, or unexplained chronic symptoms, the HERTSMI-2 is generally the more clinically actionable test because it targets the organisms most likely to cause harm and uses a standardized point-based scoring system that directly guides remediation decisions.
The HERTSMI-2 uses a dust sample collected from your home β typically from a specific area of flooring, a shelf, or an HVAC return vent. The test kit from the lab (EnviroBiomics) includes detailed collection instructions. You collect the sample yourself using a provided cloth or Swiffer-style pad, seal it, and mail it to the lab. Results are typically returned within a few weeks as spore counts in equivalents per milligram (E/mg), which you then enter into this HERTSMI calculator.
Not entirely. A score below 11 is reassuring, but as Dr. Diane Mueller notes, patients with CIRS or HLA mold gene susceptibility may still react to relatively low mold levels. Additionally, the HERTSMI-2 only tests the five most common illness-causing species β other mold species not covered by the test may still contribute to symptoms. If your score is low but you continue to experience unexplained chronic illness, a full clinical evaluation is the appropriate next step.
Each species is assigned points based on its spore concentration (E/mg) using thresholds that reflect each mold's relative toxicity. Aspergillus Penicilloides and Aspergillus Versicolor score 10 points above 500 E/mg, down to 2 points at 1β9 E/mg. Chaetomium Globosum and Stachybotrys Chartarum use lower thresholds (10 points above 125 E/mg) reflecting their higher potency at lower concentrations. Wallemia Sebi requires much higher concentrations to score β 10 points only above 2,500 E/mg. The five individual scores are summed to produce your total HERTSMI-2 score.
