Online Functional Medicine Doctor for Lyme and Mold

An online functional medicine doctor looks for the root causes of chronic illness and treats you by video, with lab work drawn near your home. My Lyme Doc focuses that care on Lyme disease, tick-borne co-infections and mold illness. Patients in 11 states can be seen from home. If your labs keep coming back “normal” and you still feel sick, this is the kind of care built for you. The first step is a $300 initial video visit.

Functional medicine is a model of care that looks for the underlying drivers of symptoms, such as infection, inflammation, gut and hormone imbalance and environmental exposure, and treats those drivers together.

Key Takeaways

  • An online functional medicine doctor works through your history, symptom pattern and lab results by video. Labs are drawn near you and prescriptions go to your pharmacy.
  • My Lyme Doc treats Lyme disease, co-infections and mold illness online in 11 states.
  • In a 2022 Italian study of 439 Lyme rash patients, 58% of those diagnosed by telemedicine started treatment within a month of rash onset, versus 14% of earlier in-person patients. The groups were not randomized.
  • A video visit cannot include a hands-on exam, and it is the wrong first step in an emergency.
  • Care starts with a $300 initial visit. Ongoing care is a membership from $400 to $1,100 per month.

What does an online functional medicine doctor do?

An online functional medicine doctor asks why you are sick, not only what to call it, and does that work by video. Most of the diagnostic work in chronic illness is conversation and lab interpretation.

You may have been told your fatigue, pain and brain fog are stress. A functional workup treats them as clues: when they started, what you were exposed to, and which systems are strained.

In a 2019 Cleveland Clinic study of 7,252 patients, functional medicine patients reported larger gains in physical health at 6 months than matched primary care patients. The study was retrospective, the difference was not significant at 12 months, and its authors called for prospective trials.

My Lyme Doc narrows that model to one group of illnesses: Lyme disease, tick-borne co-infections and mold-related illness. And if you’re looking for the best Lyme disease doctor, our page explains the three types of Lyme doctors and how they fit each case.

Tick-borne co-infections are other infections, such as Bartonella and Babesia, that can be passed by the same tick bite as Lyme disease.

If you are still deciding whether you need that level of care, see signs you need a Lyme disease specialist.

Can Lyme disease and mold illness be treated through telehealth?

Yes. In Dr. Mueller’s practice, most chronic Lyme and mold illness can be treated through telehealth, because the workup rests on history, symptom timeline and lab results.

Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick.

CDC estimates that as many as 476,000 people may be diagnosed and treated for Lyme each year in the United States, and notes the figure may be an overestimate. CDC also reports that 6 months after treatment, fatigue, body aches and trouble thinking are 5 to 10% more common in people who had Lyme. CDC calls this post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome.

Post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) is the name CDC uses for fatigue, body aches or difficulty thinking that continue after a recommended course of antibiotics.

CDC asks these patients to work with a provider to “evaluate all possible causes.” That search is where Lyme disease telehealth fits well, because it takes time rather than a hands-on exam.

Telemedicine also has data behind it for early Lyme. In a 2022 Italian study of 439 patients with the Lyme rash, 58% of those diagnosed by telemedicine began treatment within one month. Only 14% of those seen in person, in the years before the pandemic, did.

Erythema migrans is the expanding red rash at the site of a tick bite in early Lyme disease.

Mold illness is similar. CDC notes that damp, moldy buildings affect people very differently, so your home and work history carries the workup. For the mold side, see our CIRS doctor guide.

Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) is an ongoing inflammatory illness that some people develop after exposure to water-damaged, moldy buildings.

How an online visit with My Lyme Doc works

Online care at My Lyme Doc follows six steps.

  1. Confirm your state. You need to be in one of the 11 states during each appointment.
  2. Book the initial visit. The first visit is $300 and runs long on purpose, so years of results get read together.
  3. Share your history. Bring prior labs, imaging, medication lists and your exposure history, including tick bites, travel and water damage at home or work.
  4. Get labs drawn near you. Lab orders go to a draw site close to home, and results come back to your doctor.
  5. Review a plan by video. Your doctor walks you through findings and a sequenced plan. Prescriptions go to your pharmacy.
  6. Stay in touch between visits. Members get direct clinician email, so questions do not wait for the next appointment.

Dr. Mueller’s 4-Phase Method, delivered by video

Dr. Diane Mueller treats Lyme and mold in a set order, and all four phases can run by video.

  1. Build the body first. Nutrients, blood sugar, adrenal, thyroid and mitochondrial support.
  2. Lifestyle and nervous system. Regulation work through the Neuro Reset Program.
  3. Gentle, strategic detox. Paced so that Herxheimer flares stay small.
  4. Targeted microbe balancing and repair. Work on Lyme, co-infections and mold, once the body can tolerate it.

Many patients arrive after crashing on a protocol that started with the microbes. My Lyme Doc names this plainly: building the body first is “what most clinics skip.” Read more about the approach on Lyme disease treatment.

Herxheimer reaction is a temporary worsening of symptoms that can happen as the body processes dying microbes during treatment.

What a video visit can and cannot do

A video visit handles most chronic Lyme and mold care well, but it cannot replace a hands-on exam or emergency care.

Part of careBy videoNeeds in-person care
Reviewing years of history and recordsYes, this is most of the first visitNo
Ordering and reading lab testsYes, blood is drawn at a site near youOnly the blood draw itself
Prescriptions and refillsYes, sent to your local pharmacyNo
Nervous system and lifestyle workYesNo
Looking at a rash or skin changeAsk the team before your visitSometimes, if a hands-on look is needed
Hands-on physical examNoYes, coordinated with a clinician near you
Emergencies, such as chest pain or trouble breathingNoYes, call 911 or go to an ER

The Italian study had a limit too: it did not look for signs of co-infections. A long history visit is where a clinician looks for those signs. Comparison chart of what an online functional medicine doctor can and cannot do by video for Lyme disease and mold illness

When online care is the wrong first step

Online functional medicine is built for chronic, complex illness, not urgent problems. Start somewhere else if any of these fit.

  • You have chest pain, trouble breathing, a stiff neck with high fever, or sudden weakness. Call 911.
  • You were bitten recently and have a new fever or rash. Get prompt care from a local clinic or an urgent telehealth service, not a new-patient chronic care visit.
  • Your case needs a hands-on exam or a procedure before anything else.
  • You live outside the 11 states and cannot travel to one of them once a year.

Outside those states, a Lyme-literate clinician close to home is the better route. See our guide to finding a Lyme literate doctor near you.

What does an online functional medicine doctor cost at My Lyme Doc?

The initial video visit is $300. Ongoing care is a membership from $400 to $1,100 per month, depending on how much support your case needs.

Membership covers visits, direct clinician email and prescription management, so a question between visits is not a new bill. Labs, supplements and medications are billed separately, and costs are quoted before anything is ordered. Full details are on My Lyme Doc pricing.

Why patients choose My Lyme Doc for online care

Most patients reach My Lyme Doc after years of dead ends, often after 20 or more specialists.

“I had gone to 20 top specialists over 3 years and was not able to get a correct diagnosis.” Rose M., Austin, Texas

Jill Cooper of Colorado had already tried functional medicine elsewhere: “After working with 4 other functional practitioners, I’ve finally found my last stop!”

Katie Watcher of Colorado, on her first month: “I went from laying in bed most of the day to being able to cook for myself and take showers again.”

The practice puts its own stance simply. “You won’t find a clinician here who hasn’t walked a version of your path. We’re not treating your chart. We’re treating someone we recognize.”

My Lyme Doc has worked with more than 1,000 patients and holds a 4.8-star average rating. 99% of patients come in with missing root causes that others have missed. More stories are on patient testimonials.

“Dr. Mueller’s approach to medicine is refreshing! There is only so much you can do with western medicine and in my life I was needing a new approach.  By addressing the whole body, nutritional diet factors, environmental factors, blood work, and incorporating ideas I had not previously known, I was able to break through with my conditions.  I am not only experiencing less pain in my life, but through the process of healing guided by Dr. Diane Mueller, I am now happy to say I have more consciousness surrounding how I eat, what to eat and when things are appropriate.  Living by example Dr. Mueller has a vibrancy that makes you want to learn and know more about your body and overall health.  I highly recommend her to anyone looking for new answers, a new approach to health, or in need of freedom from pain and limitations.”
